Celebrating Compassion and Creativity: The Story of Catherine Krummey and Her Veg Out Blog

October 11, 2024

Catherine Krummey, a passionate advocate for plant-based living, launched her blog Veg Out in 2022 to combine her love for vegan comfort food and film. Pairing delicious vegan recipes with her favorite movies and TV shows, Veg Out has become a space where food lovers and movie buffs connect.

Involvement With Compassionate Action for Animals

Since moving to the Twin Cities in 2021, Catherine has explored vegetarian and vegan organizations, eventually coming upon Compassionate Action for Animals (CAA). Discovering that her values match with CAA’s, she has gone on to participate in our events and campaigns. This year, she volunteered to use her social media skills on behalf of Twin Cities Veg Fest

Catherine’s Compassionate Food Journey

Catherine’s journey towards plant-based living began in 2009 when she became a vegetarian, and by 2023, she fully transitioned to a vegan diet. The abundance of vegan options in the Twin Cities helped her make the switch. When asked about her favorite restaurants she told us “I enjoyed everything I have eaten at J. Selby’s, Trio, Pizza Lucé and Reverie.”

Her love for cooking and baking fuels her creativity, often inspiring her to veganize comfort foods like pies, casseroles, and ice cream — many of which she shares on her blog.

An Outlet for Creativity

Her blog paired vegan caramel ice cream dessert nachos with the movie Real Women Have Curves

Veg Out is more than just a recipe blog — it’s a creative space where Catherine merges her passions for food and film. With a background in journalism and film studies from the University of Missouri-Columbia, she expertly pairs vegan dishes with cinematic experiences each week, offering readers a unique blend of entertainment and food.

When asked how she comes up with the pairings, Catherine repliedSometimes a movie or show will have a very obvious pairing, like “The Breakfast Club” (it’s in the title) or “Pushing Daisies” (the show is all about a piemaker). Other times, I will pick a favorite dish from a certain era of my life and pair it with one of my favorite shows or movies from that era, like when I paired two childhood favorites: fettuccine alfredo and “Faerie Tale Theatre.”

The Inspiration for the Blog

Catherine wanted an outlet to write about film and TV, and after receiving interest in the dishes she had been making and posting on Instagram, she decided to combine her passions. The idea for pairing recipes with movies and TV shows came to her in the middle of the night, along with the name Veg Out. She immediately purchased the domain and set up social media accounts to bring her vision to life.

Balancing Life and Blogging

Though balancing her blog with a full-time job can be challenging, Catherine dedicates a few hours each day to recipe testing, content creation, and brainstorming new ideas. Her unique approach to meal and media pairings often leads to delightful combinations that surprise and entertain her readers.

Her Other Interests

Catherine lives in St. Paul with her husband and their two cats, Yowzer and Jack-Jack. When she’s not blogging, she enjoys traveling, trying new restaurants, and spending time with loved ones.
