The majesty of Barney: Rescued and thriving at Herbivorous Acres

February 12, 202

Meet Barney, a remarkable resident of Herbivorous Acres sanctuary. This 5-year-old Saanen goat captivates the hearts of visitors with his presence and inspiring story of survival. He was rescued alongside his mother, Bunny, in 2019 from a dairy farm in Wisconsin.

Barney’s story began when he was just a few months old. He was deemed unprofitable in the dairy industry due to his gender. It’s a heartbreaking reality, but male goats are typically sold for meat since they do not produce milk. Fortunately, the farmer agreed to surrender Barney as well as his mother. This act of compassion not only saved Barney’s life but also ensured that he could remain by his mother’s side, providing them both with a chance at a new life filled with love and care.

Upon arrival at Herbivorous Acres, Barney and his goat family were diagnosed with two incurable diseases, CAE (Caprine Arthritis Encephalitis) and CL (Caseous Lymphadenitis). However, with skilled veterinary care, the sanctuary has been able to manage these conditions. Herbivorous Acres’s commitment to these goats’ well-being is a testament to their dedication to the residents.

Barney’s towering presence makes him an unmistakable figure within the goat herd. As the sanctuary’s largest goat, he assumes the role of the herd’s guardian, watching over the farm with unwavering vigilance. His inquisitive nature leads him to inspect every nook and cranny with his horns. Barney’s curiosity is a reminder of the innate sense of exploration and wonder of goats.

While Barney dutifully guards the farm, he also finds solace in the simple pleasures of sanctuary life. Basking in the warmth of the sun, he indulges in restful naps. His love for hay is evident as he relishes each bite. Barney’s presence radiates joy and contentment.

Barney, the charismatic Saanen goat, stands tall as a symbol of resilience and triumph over adversity. His journey from the dairy farm to Herbivorous Acres showcases the power of compassion. As he continues to explore and find joy in the simple pleasures, Barney is an inspiration to all who encounter him.
